Ultrasound scanning of the hand/wrist is usually focussed to a single area/pathology. Extra areas may also be examined if symptomatic and/or appropriate.

Total appointment length:

40 minutes.

Common reasons for scan?

  • Swelling.

  • Discomfort.

  • Tendon damage.

  • Ligament damage.

  • Lump.

  • Tenosynovitis.

  • Inflammation.

What areas can be examined?

  • Extensor and flexor tendons.

  • Joints of the hand/wrist and fingers/thumb.

  • Ligaments of the thumb/finger joints.

  • Carpal and Guyon's tunnel, for nerve compression.

  • Finger pulleys.

  • Bony cortex, when looking for erosions.

Preparation?

Watches and rings should be removed if possible.

Report:

You will be given a printed copy and/or emailed an electronic copy of the ultrasound scan report.

Images from the scan can be purchased at the reception desk. Please note: Due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.
